The Jeep Grand Cherokee morphed last year into an all-new, fifth-generation model. The changes take this SUV more upscale while preserving its off-road capabilities.
What’s New/Key Changes From Last Year
The Grand Cherokee’s most notable change this year is that the Trailhawk off-road configuration is now available only in the 4xe plug-in hybrid model, which is covered in a separate buyer’s guide entry.
Available Trims
Jeep offers the Grand Cherokee in Laredo, Limited, Overland, and Summit trim levels. Depending on trim and options chosen, power is from either a 3.6L V6 or a 5.7L V8; both engines are matched with an eight-speed transmission and four-wheel drive.
Standard Features
Laredo’s standard kit includes auto on/off LED headlights, 17-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone A/C, digital gauges, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, heated front seats and steering wheel, six USB ports, two 12-volt power outlets, six-speaker audio, passive keyless entry, and an 8.4-inch touchscreen. You’ll also find a suite of driver safety assists comprising active lane management, adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, forward collision mitigation, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear parking sensors.
Limited adds a power tailgate, automatic high beams, LED fog lights, 18-inch wheels, ambient cabin lighting, leather upholstery, a power passenger seat, heated second-row seats, a garage door remote, and a 10.1-inch touchscreen.
Overland gains air suspension with semi-active damping, a hands-free tailgate, power-folding/auto-dimming side mirrors, a dual-pane sunroof, 20-inch wheels, rain-sensing wipers, an auto-dimming interior mirror, Nappa leather, ventilated front seats, a power-adjustable steering column, nine-speaker stereo, and front parking sensors
Summit brings four-zone A/C, front-seat massage, wood steering wheel trim, intersection collision avoidance assist, surround-view cameras, and traffic sign recognition.
Key Options
In Laredo trim, an Altitude package adds some black exterior accents, wireless phone charging, rain-sensing wipers, and a 115-volt power outlet.
In Overland and Summit models, the advanced pro-tech group brings a head-up display, active driving assist, night vision, intersection assist, and surround-view cameras.
Limited and Overland buyers can add the lux tech group with rain-sensing wipers, wireless charging, ventilated front seats, power steering column, rear window sunshades, a digital rearview mirror, surround-view cameras, and intersection assist.
Overland offers an off-road package, and Laredo and Limited can add a trailer towing group.
Finally, Summit can be augmented with the Summit Reserve package of extended leather interior, walnut wood trim, ventilated second-row seats, massaging front seats, a front passenger infotainment screen, 21-inch wheels, and a McIntosh stereo.
Fuel Economy
Jeep’s fuel consumption estimates for the Grand Cherokee are 12.3/9.2 L/100 km (city/highway) for V6-powered models, and 16.7/10.9 L/100 km with the V8 engine.
Competition
Consider the Grand Cherokee an alternative to the Mercedes-Benz GLE, Porsche Cayenne, Audi Q7, BMW X5, Volvo XC90, Cadillac XT6 and Lincoln Aviator.
